Who remits your tax
You do. Faerra is not a merchant of record.
Every sale on Faerra is made by your business. The buyer's card is charged on your own Stripe account, the money lands in your balance, your name is on the receipt, and the contract for the thing you sold is between you and your buyer. Faerra takes a fee for providing the shop. That is the whole of our part in it.
Because the sale is yours, the sales tax or VAT on it is yours as well — to calculate, to collect, to declare and to pay over. Nothing on this platform changes that, and no setting here can.
What we do instead
We have Stripe Tax work out the right amount while the buyer is still on the checkout page. It uses where your buyer is, what you are selling, and the places you have told Stripe you are registered to collect. The tax is added on top of your price, charged with the payment, and sits in your Stripe balance separately from your own revenue until you remit it.
Until you add a registration, nothing is added to your prices. That is the correct answer rather than a broken one: charging tax somewhere you are not registered to collect it is worse than charging none.
When you might need to register
Most places set a threshold — an amount of sales, or a number of transactions, into that place in a year — past which you are required to register and collect. Thresholds differ by country and, in the United States, by state. Digital products are treated differently from physical ones in many of them, and the difference is usually not in your favour.
Stripe monitors your sales against those thresholds and will tell you when you are approaching one. We surface that on your tax settings page. It is a prompt to go and check, not advice that you are required to register — that decision, and the registration itself, is between you and the tax authority.
Why other platforms answer differently
Some platforms sell your product to the buyer themselves and then pay you, which makes them the merchant of record and the tax theirs. It is a real service and they charge accordingly.
Faerra cannot offer it, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise: the money moves directly into your Stripe account, which is what keeps your buyer, your payout timing and your customer relationship yours. Those two arrangements are mutually exclusive, and this is the one we chose.
None of this is tax advice, and we are not qualified to give any. If you are unsure where you need to be registered, ask an accountant in the places you sell.
